I have been typically pear shaped my entire life. I remember wearing some hideous outfits that made my hips and thighs appear gigantic. Here are some tips to avoid the mistakes I have made in the past.
Firstly, longer shirts work much better than short-hemmed shirts for pear shaped body types. Tunics, longer t-shirts, and long floral blouses can make bigger hips appear more proportional. Pair a tunic with mid-waist jeans for a perfect balance. Avoid empire waist-lines and belly shirts at all costs!
I have also found that halter tops and tank tops work much better than tube tops and sleeveless shirts. If you are wearing a dress, make sure it does not hug your hips and try to find one that accentuates the chest area. Push-up bras can also help accentuate your chest.
If you have a pear shape, never wear extremely low fitting jeans that are tight. This will create a muffin top effect, and no one wants that. Another quick tip is to wear solids on bottom and designs, stripes, or bright colors on top. This will accentuate the top half of the body instead of the hips and thighs.
The best advice is to be aware of your body type and find the look that is best for you. Some people are a combination of different shapes or body types, so when trying to conceal your figure flaws, make sure you are finding clothes that accentuate your best attributes.
