A jumper dress is also called a "pinafore dress" or "pinny" for short in British English. It is a dress without a collar or sleeves and is worn as a dress or an overdress. Traditionally it is worn over a sweater, a blouse or a shirt. Jumper dresses look almost like a female version of the overall pants and also looks like an apron. Jumper can be worn throughout the year, be it summer or winter. During summer days you wear it as is, without an underlying blouse and during colder seasons you wear it over a top, blouse or sweater.
When the jumper is cut and designed like an apron with a bib in front and tiebacks, it is also called an apron dress. There are some examples in the history of jumper dresses that aprons were derived from them. Traditionally, jumper dresses were a work dress, but they have made their way into the fashion world, significantly different than they were years ago.
Nowadays, the jumper dress has become popular among teenage students in western countries and they come up with contemporary styles of wearing it. They usually wear it with a short-sleeved blouse or colorful long-sleeved top underneath and paired with matching tights, pumps or boots. Because of its basic cut, the jumper dress is not only worn by teenagers. It is also commonly worn by the mature ones but in a different style.
