A sheath dress features a figure-hugging silhouette with a well-defined waist (no belt or waistband). It may be designed with or without sleeves, and are typically most flattering on toned, hour-glass figures.

In fashion, a sheath-dress is a type of dress designed to tightly fit the body. It may have darts at the breast and curve slightly inward at the waist in order to suggest the form and curve of a woman's body. It is often made of a very light and thin material like cotton or silk, and rarely contains any flourishes. Unlike the shorter cocktail dress and the longer ballroom dress, it typically falls around the knees or lower thighs, and can be either strapped or strapless.

It is best worn on women with a proportionate figure. As it is a figure-fitting dress, it will accentuates the female lines and curve, projecting a very elegant and feminine look.

It is possibly the most versatile dress out there, as it can be worn to work with a simple jacket and taken directly out to cocktails thereafter.
