Storing Clothes

Basic tips on storing clothes

Don't cram too many clothes into your wardrobe, you'll only crease everything, leave some breathing space for them. If you find you have too many clothes than you can store, you should purge the ones you no longer wear. Leave some rooms for air circulation to prevent mildew.

Make sure clothing is completely dry before storing. Moisture can cause mildew and bad odors to form. Clothing bag is another option to keep away from moisture but not in plastic bags as the bag traps odors and generates static charges that attract dust and cause mildew development.

As a preventive measure, keep an open box of baking soda or activated carbon fiber odor remover in the wardrobe to absorb odors, change it every 3 months. You can also place some mothballs in your wardrobe, place them in an old sock so they don't touch the garments.

Evening and special occasion clothes, especially white color should be hung up and kept in a suit or dress bag for protection from dust and mildew.

Sweaters, knitwear, stretchy clothing, or delicate and fragile apparel should be folded and not be hung, hanging will cause the garment to stretch out of shape.

Always stack folded garments with the heaviest at the bottom and be sure to refold often to change the line of the folds hence avoiding the fabric becoming permanently creased. Try to place acid free tissue or unbleached muslin between each garment as a separator to protect the dyes from migrating from one cloth to another and also allow the fabrics space to breathe.

When storing clothes, always use fabric support straps or loops, and when necessary sew additional straps to garments, to reduce stress. These straps help to distribute the garment weight and minimize the distortion of the garment in areas, such as the neckline.

Avoid wire hangers, unless they are covered. Wire hangers can rust and stain fabric, and the metal edges can snag the fabric. Best is to use plastic, wood or padded hangers.

Remove all ornamental jewelry or pins from clothing. Also, remove items from pockets so the fabric isn't weighed down over time.
