Tea Dress / Gown

A tea dress or tea gown was a style of dress worn in th 19th and 20th centuries. It was usually considered a dress to be worn only inside the home and looked in style like a more casual, although elegant, and billowy ball gown. Tea GownTea gowns had a longer train of material flowing from the back of the dress and the sleeves were always kept long and flowing. As beautiful as these dresses are, they were not considered appropriate attire in public and were reserved only to be worn around close, friends and family members usually in the evening and around dinner time. The only exception to this rule was when possibly attending a dinner at another close friend's house or that of another family member's house.

In today's world, these are no longer a popular form of dress but the tea gown has evolved to take a place in our culture and does exist to be worn by some older generations. Modernized, the closest thing that we have today that could still pass as or be referred to as a tea gown would be a light, flowing dress of sheer fabric most often seen produced in spring-like, pastel colors. It should extend to the calf or ankles in length.
