A wedding dress / gown is a dress to be worn by the bride in her wedding ceremony.
The color and style of the dress depends upon the culture and the social status of the couple to be married. Bridesmaid dresses is the sister dress that is very closely associated with wedding dress.
In early times, a bride in a poor status wore her best church or Sunday dress to her wedding but those of the higher class displayed their affluence through fabulous and very expensive gowns.
The traditional color of a wedding gown is white as it symbolizes purity but some opt for the cream or ivory shade. 
But before the Victorian era brides had to wear any color except black or red. In eastern culture like in China and India, brides wore red. But nowadays, the modern bride has her preference as to style and color, however, the white or cream remains to be a popular choice.
A bride may purchase a ready-to-wear gown or have it custom made for her by a dressmaker in order to have the perfect fit. Some may wear a family heirloom, which is the wedding gown of her mother or grandmother.
A veil is also traditionally worn as a headdress or as face covering during the ceremony. 
It varies in different styles and length, from short to long as in a train.
The bride traditionally carries a bouquet of flowers and the preferred choice are the fresh ones to be thrown away after the ceremony. Today, most brides if not all, change into another gown for the reception after the wedding rites.
Most commonly these gowns are made of silk, satin, or taffeta. Three popular styles for wedding dresses are the Empire, A-line, and Ball Gown. A-line dresses are versatile and can accommodate most body types. One advantage to the A-line is a full skirt that can hide lower body flaws. Like A-line dresses, Empire dresses can accommodate most body types as it can cover body features that are less desirable. One feature of the Ball Gown dress is the large skirt. This allows for one's waist to be accentuated and hide one's lower body. For this reason, this dress can also accommodate most body types.
