An evening dress or gown is generally a type of fancy apparel for ladies to wear during special occasions and/or events. This type of dress is usually ranges in length from tea and ballerina to full-length.

Evening gowns are often made of a luxury fabric such as chiffon, velvet, satin, or silk. The dress may have some sequins and or ribbon on it, or it could be just the plain material.

Although the terms are used interchangeably, ball gowns and evening gowns differ in that a ball gown will always have a full, flared skirt and a strapless bodice; in contrast, an evening gown can be any silhouette - sheath, mermaid, A-line or trumpet shaped - and may have straps, halters or even sleeves.

This type of dress could be worn to a dinner party, company party, prom or another type of dance. The dresses are generally worn with heels. Some ladies prefer to wear elbow length gloves that match their evening gown.

A lady's hair is most likely going to be curled or put up in a bun of sorts, but it does not have to be done as such. An evening gown, when worn properly, should be worn with poise, style and grace. If worn correctly, the lady wearing the evening gown should appear as though they are competing in the evening gown competition in a beauty pageant such as Miss America.
