Women's sweaters are garments made of knitted or crocheted material covering the upper part of the body, worn for warmth usually worn over a shirt, blouse, T-shirt, or other top. It is usually made from wool; however, they can be made of cotton or synthetic fibers material. It was originally named a sweater because it was designed to absorb sweat but later became a must have for the ladies as variety of design evolved.

pullover cardigan Pullover, Cardigan, Sweatshirt and Sweater Vest are the general types of sweater. The difference between them is a cardigan is a type of sweater that ties, buttons or zips down the front; by contrast, a pullover does not open in front, but forms a solid tube around the torso and is worn by pulling it over the head. Sweatshirt ia a loose, long-sleeved, collarless pullover of soft, absorbent fabric, as cotton jersey, with close-fitting or elastic cuffs and sometimes a drawstring at the waist, commonly worn during athletic activity for warmth or to induce sweating. If the sweater has no sleeves, it is generally called a sweater vest or tank top.

Even within these groups, there is a great variety of design. All the various types of necklines are found, although the V-neck, turtleneck and the crew neck are the most popular. The waistline is typically at hip height, but can vary significantly. The sleeve length is likewise variable, ranging from small cap sleeves to short sleeves to three-quarter sleeves to full-length sleeves.
